Different Ways to Make a Kid Love Reading

Introduction

There is only one way to increase the awareness and IQ level in children. They can get higher IQ levels only through the reading habit. The children should not read the book just for doing the assignments and homework. Instead, they should love and enjoy reading the books. Most parents get the board books in the hope that their wards would read them all. That is not always the case. This exercise only helps their wards to increase the reading score, not overall school performance. Only very few of them get the required skills to raise their IQ levels.

Early Inculcation

The habit of reading never really gets ingrained in childhood as they get distracted very easily. Your kids love shuffling through pages to look at the pictures in books as toddler. They may even enjoy reading as elementary school-going children. Life offers so many other avenues for children to entertain themselves. Hence, the reading may become more like work than play for them. They never get to that ecstasy level where reading a book is more fun than anything else. Hence, we need to inculcate this habit with great labour in our children early in their lives.

Read to your children from the earliest age:Every child would listen to story at the bed time. Just read to them stories from a book for children. While doing so, take time to effectively narrate the stories to them. You can always hold back the information and tell them to read the books to get more information. Buy story books as some of your child's first toys. Whenever you get some break, grab a book from the diaper bag you carry and read the stories to your child.

Begin visiting the library regularly: Some children get fascinated by seeing others reading books. Hence, you can try visiting the nearby library regularly with your child. You can use the time in the library to read and narrate stories to him. The kids would never sit still at library. However, he would sit and listen if he likes the story. Keep library books on a separate shelf in the living room or kitchen so you don't lose them. By arranging this way, you can always easily find something new book for reading to the child.

Read to your children as often as possible: While reading stories to children, always take pain to simplify the situations in them. One such time when you can try is to make them sit before the food. You should make the children understand that listening to the reading is just like listening to a radio. When they listen, they can look at the food and savour its taste. Occasionally, you can show the pictures depicted in the story books to them. This would make them listen and force them to stay in one place.

Don't push your children to learn to read: Don't force your children to learn reading. If they get interested in knowing more things, they will try to learn reading after getting the preliminary skills. Your goal is not to help them sound out words. Instead, you are expected to instil a love for books in them.

Don't stop reading to children once they learn to read: Read to your children even after they acquire the reading skills. This would help them to stay interested in reading.

Encourage children to ask questions: While reading out stories to your children, you can expect questions from them. This would give you an opportunity to open up a friendly discussion with them about values they have learned and choices they have come across in their lives.
This article talks about the way to make the children love books and reading. Early exposure to books and stories by reading the contents to them will do the trick. Also make the children aware of the library will help inculcate the reading habit. Read the rest from the article. For more such information, please read the link http://tvmbala.blogspot.com.

From Picture Books to 'Real' Books

A recent review of a book for older children described the book as 'a completely humorous fantasy adventure that is great for young readers transitioning from picture books to "real" books.' This draws attention to an important stage in the process of learning to read.

Children are introduced to books by being shown attractive volumes of brightly coloured pictures, often with pages of stiff card, sometimes very small and sometimes very large. Beginning with the letters of the alphabet in big and colourful font, text is introduced as single word captions, typically with the names of familiar animals or objects. As the child progresses in age and reading ability, the text expands and the pictures grow fewer and smaller, but there is a stage before the pictures disappear altogether when the text has expanded to become complete stories.

At this stage of reading development many children are still reading with a parent, sometimes at bedtime, with mum or dad still doing some or all of the reading. With this in mind, the reviewer continued: 'Each chapter is a complete story in itself which is perfect for its target audience.' A complete story is to be preferred in setting a young mind to rest, especially if the ending is a happy one. Perhaps best of all is where the same familiar characters have an adventure that is completed in each chapter.

The young person who has browsed through many picture books may still need an occasional picture to help focus the imagination. As another reviewer recorded of the same children's book: 'Interspersed within the book are a series of clever black and white line drawings to add an interesting and fun dimension.' At only one picture in each chapter, and devoid of colour, illustration is almost eliminated, but enough remains to answer the question: 'What does s/he look like?' before the sleepy head falls back on the pillow.

To ask how long should a bedtime story last might seem like asking how long is a piece of string, but some guidelines can be deduced. Reading for half an hour at 100 words a minute suggests a story length of 3000 words. Allowing for some parents being a little more generous with their time, or being faster readers, might indicate a range of say, 3000 to 5000 words. This is perhaps the ideal chapter length for books at this transitory stage in reading progress, a stage just before the pictures disappear altogether and the maturing mind can weave its pictures from the text alone.

Oh No, We're Back to School!

Initially we might think this statement is coming from our children or from teachers who have had the summer off-No. This thought or statement is a frequent one that's coming from parents.

Suddenly we're back focusing on our children's schedule, their homework, their sports practices, their school events, and teacher/parent conferences. The list seems to be never-ending after the more leisurely days of summer break.

Our Busy Lives Become Even Busier

In the summer, we often have the ability to be more flexible with our time. We are able to create and maintain more of a balance in our life between:

• Parent and child connections

• Couple connections

• Focusing on ourselves and our own needs

Now that school has resumed here we are again using a good part of our time, energy, and attention on what our children need and often pushing our own needs aside. Of course, for our children, having them in the focus of our world may feel good and nurturing for them. Isn't that what we're supposed to feel as parents, too?

... Yet What About Us?

So many parents may think this, but many don't have the courage to verbalize this thought. We are often uncomfortable talking with others about the desire to fulfill our own needs and have our own time for fear of what other parents might think or how they might judge us.

"Back-to-school time is tough not just for kids, but for parents too. Some moms and dads get so caught up dealing with their children's lives - from helping with homework to fears of bullying -that they have little time, energy or attention to deal with their own problems." ~ Judy Kuriansky, Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist

Will They Judge Me?

We might fear that verbalizing these personal thoughts may make others think poorly of us as parents and think:

• We're selfish

• That there's something wrong with us

• That we're bad parents

Some may have feelings of unhappiness about missing some of their time with their partner or the loss of some of the "me time" they've just started to enjoy over the summer. But somehow it does not feel emotionally safe to talk about this because of concerns about how other parents may perceive our feelings.

Have You Noticed a Change in Your Emotions?

Yet somehow some parents may not even have the thought about 'oh no we're back to school' and feel as if they've made a seamless transition from summer break to back to school. Although sometimes ignoring this transition, in an effort to do it all, may manifest itself in other subtle ways. By Kathleen Dwyer Blair

A Book for Brighter Kids

A good children's book can do many things. It can ease the path to sleep for a restless child, entertain a group of youngsters through a quiet interlude at home or at school and speed a reluctant reader on the road to fluency. Yet another benefit may be hidden. As one reviewer of a children's book commented: 'This book also has elements of education in it that I appreciated, Holly didn't notice but she understood it so I think that was very well done by the author.' The reviewer was happy that her niece, Holly, would remember what she had read, especially what she found to be funny and interesting. Useful facts and information were being absorbed without conscious effort.

A reviewer of historical novels commented that the same children's book, 'with wit and delightful aplomb takes the young reader on an adventurous journey though some significant moments in history.' But not only historical facts might be unconsciously absorbed from a children's book by an enthralled reader, seeds of knowledge from almost every aspect of human life and human nature can be sown in this fertile field. And as with all seeds, they will germinate and flourish if the soil conditions are right for cultivation. The developing mind will harvest that for which it is prepared.

Another reviewer wrote: 'If you read this as a bedtime story be prepared for lots of questions. Very educational.' As every teacher knows, if you can get your students asking questions you know you are succeeding. Questions arise from curiosity, a desire to know the answer, and a young person is much more likely to remember a fact that s/he has earnestly sought than one that is imposed. The ideal children's book is one that is just ahead of the reader's progress, one that entertains and amuses but also wets the appetite to know more.

Yet another reviewer said: 'I'm still not sure whether this book is geared toward children or adults. Maybe both. It was an utterly delightful read with lots of laugh out loud moments as the author weaves fantasy and legend with actual history.' A children's book that adults can also enjoy must be one that stretches the young mind, painlessly implanting knowledge and stimulating curiosity. Jokes that adults appreciate may be lost on all but the brightest children, but a successful children's book can leave all young readers brighter than before.

The Buzz Lightyear Toy Flies Again

As the holidays draw near, the magic of Walt Disney World kicks into high gear with the promotion of the Buzz Lightyear toy. Get ready for the two week opening of the re-released Toy Story movies, both 1 and 2. The movies will make another theatrical premiere for two weeks in the month of October 2009. This kickoff will set the scene for the latest of the Toy Story movies, Toy Story III.

Toy Story III, featuring the Buzz Lightyear toy, which will be released in Spring of 2010 at theaters near you.

The re-release of the first two original movies will be released as a double feature. The new movie will be released in Disney's Pixar 3-D and the regular theatrical version. The Buzz light year toy along with all the gang will be back. Woody the sheriff will again include the voice over of Tom Hanks, followed by most of the original cast of the two preceding movies.

Featured in Walt Disney World are most of the characters from the movies, to include the main characters and can be seen at Hollywood studios, and in some parts of the Magic Kingdom, for example the Monsters Inc. Social Laugh Club, which most recently this year I was able to get a few good snap shots of Woody and Buzz.

The Buzz Lightyear toy has had a few modifications over the last 14 years, and there are more than 25 different variations of the toy, available in most stores ranging from Internet stores, to eBay, to local department toy stores. With the release of Toy Story III, you can expect that Disney World will have a few tricks up their sleeves and make some new edition. Look for them this holiday season. To Infinity and Beyond...
